What I should like to perfect is a message on the following lines: 'I am contacting you because I know we are NOT related. When you next upload your tree with seven hundred references to one of my surnames, I will be able to recognise the genuinely new surnames' Has anyone mastered such a message? Clearly my example is not acceptable, though it would serve its purpose.

I'm serious, Kim! There's someone on this site with an absolutely ginormous tree that they reload on a weekly basis. I can not remember whether they have 712 or 734 references to one of my surnames, but I do know that there is no relationship. It would be so much easier if I could just scroll down the list to look for people I had not contacted before. They'd stick out like sore thumbs. I just don't want to sound as rude as I feel like being!

Brenda, Does his name start with J and end with N? He's got my names as well, but again, NO relations.

I'm obviously getting my knickers in a twist over this. If you like, it's me that's the creep, not them. They have a huge tree, which is doubtless beautifully researched, accurate and legitimate. But they are not related. It's a surname like Johnson. I want to contact them so that when they next upload their tree, I can immediately ignore all their references and concentrate on the few genuinely new names added. But I'm clearly going to sound Mad, Bad and Dangerous to know. I'm sure that other people must have employed this tactic - possibly by sending automatic messages. I don't want to irritate or offend, I just want to cross them off my list. Their tree is worldwide and their christian name is fairly common, so I currently have to hover over each one if I wish to identify them. All seven hundred plus.

Aaaaaahhhhhhh! The penny has just dropped! lol I wasn't quite sure what you were getting at at first Brenda but now I see! I can see it must be very frustrating for you. I suppose you could just click and send a blank message. This way you won't appear mad, bad or dangerous! lol. You will just run the risk of appearing slightly batty! lol Jeanette x

Thanks for that, Janette. Batty old woman whose finger slipped? Yes, I think I could manage that role!
