So I am asking you good people in figuring this one out please see below

Richard

Richard Report 26 Jul 2005 15:51

I have been trying for two days solid to find info to solve this but no luck .....so far.... 1881census: I have William WR Fursman (b1864 Whitchurch Canonicorum) living with Edith Pady (b1864 Axminster) 1883: They have son called Walter Fursman (b1883 Whitchurch) 1885: William WR Fursman marries Annie Hussey (b1864 Hawkchurch) 1891census: Edith Pady is back at parents home in Hawkchurch with son Walter 1891census: William WR Fursman and Annie are living in Whitchurch with their 4 children. 1901census: Edith Pady is living in Hawkchurch with brother and sisters (no sign of Walter) 1901census: William WR Fursman and Annie have a Walter Fursman (son) listed with them but has the birth date 1893 (b1893 Whitchurch) OK so......... Two possibilties as far as I can see it then are: Walter was back living with his father William WR Fursman by 1901 and there is an error on the birth date for him in the 1901 census. Reads 1893 and should be 1883 Or.... William had another son 10 years later with Annie and called him Walter too. Any ideas you good people??

I think you are going to have to send for the birth certificate if you can find it on 1837 or freeBMD. that will tell you who the mother was. Ann Glos

Richard Can't find either birth 1883 or 1893 on ancestry civil reg. BUT I note that William has initials WR. Is the W for Walter - is it his father's name? He may have chosen to name two different sons by the same name, especially if perhaps he had abandoned or lost touch with his first son - maybe he wanted his legitimate child to have his father's name? Or maybe the first Walter died. Can't see a death on ancestry either, but that doesn't mean much. nell

I'd say the one in 1901 is Annies son. Saying that, I can only find one birth... Birth Dec 1882 Fursman Walter Ernest Bridport 5a 389 which I think is the first one? Only one death, but he's a bit old lol Death Dec 1882 Fursman Walter 53 Bridport 5a 235 (guess this is the one he's living with in 1881)

Thanks for your help people, if we cant find the birth, how would I get the certificate? It would be interesting to see the 'original' of the 1901 census to see if it does look anything like 1883 not 1893, I dont subscribe to any sites as cant afford it, but is there somewhere you could view these online? Yes Tracy I think that is William's Uncle Walters death. Ann Sussex maybe so....is he on the 1891 census? Thanks Nell and Ann Glous for your ideas too xxx

I had a look at the image yesterday evening: his age is 8 and there's no suggestion that it should read '18'. Firstly there was no shadow of another digit, and secondly, the children are recorded by descending age and he's below children of less than 18. [All 'as I recall', that is!] I'd hoped, for your sake, that it could be a mistranscription. Christine

5 of the 6 births are on FreeBMD, spelt Furzman with a z, plus a bonus child Ephraim. Looks like there were 2 Walters then

You can always ask the local register office if they can find either or both births. There's a list of register offices here: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/RegOffice/ Local offices don't use the GRO indexes. nell
