I think i have one of those dodgy Vicar written certs because the address is 'their parish'!! On the Census she was born in Newcastle, maybe they got it wrong. Will have to see if i can find some Scotland info |

With a name like that could she have been in Scotland? You won't find Scottish records anywhere except Scottish (pay for) sites I believe. Someone will correct me if that's wrong. Anne |

The correct spelling is WEMYSS and is pronounced 'Weems'. It has strong Scottish connections. Olde Crone |

I thought Wemyes must be unique too, but i havent found any Wemyes with Ellen in on any census. I have searched Ellen Wemyes for a birth and nothing comes up. It must be significant because my g'grandad also was Wemyes Elliott, so it must have been important enough for them to have given him this, either as a double name or as a middle name. The reason i know its definately them is because my grandad used to say that technically they should have a double barrelled name, and when i mentioned it was something like Wemyes (i didnt know how to say it) my mum came out with it straight away. I am unable to find Ellen anywhere before her marriage to William. She was born in Yorkshire (as per census) and then disappeared off the face of the earth for 20 years. Also i have looked for a Christopher Nicholson marrying a Wemyes but there is nothing either |

Robyne - I don't remember your previous thread, but surely Ellen's middle name, Wemyes, must be some kind of clue? Have you already looked for her birth registration? I can't see it on FreeBMD but if you haven't already looked through the GRO indexes it must be worth a look, because I would think her name must be unique so if you find it you would be able to order her birth cert. Sorry if this is something you have tried already. If that has already drawn a blank, I would suggest you look at all the Wemyes references you can find - for example, freeBMD only has about 50 Wemyes surname entries altogether, and the FreeBMD database on Ancestry only has 9 entries with Wemyes as a first or middle name (I thought the search for that would be quicker on ancestry.) There must be a connection between the Wemyes and the Nicholsons somewhere, mustn't there? It could be Ellen's mother's maiden name or further back in either her father's or mother's line. Kate. |

Sorry for the late reply, hubbie was on the computer! yes its Newcastle in Northumberland. I have an address in 1881 of Byker Hill The writing is really bad but i think the witnesses were Peter Humfrays? and Mary Ann Watson? Sorry cant really read it, but it is something like that. first names are definate, cant tell too much with surnames |

This is probably a stupid question, but on your previous thread you said that Ellen was born in Newcastle, but didn't put a county. I have assumed it was the one in Northumberland. Is that right?? Sarah |

Following on from my previous thread, i now have the marriage certificate William Elliott and Ellen Wemyes Nicholson 1879. William Occupation Smith (which im presuming is a blacksmith) Fathers - Thomas Elliott - Striker Christopher Nicholson - Glass Maker I believe i have found Thomas and family due to in 1881 William and Thomas lived 2 doors apart doing the same job, and followed back. (Byker in Newcastle) But i am still stuck on the Nicholson family, they do not appear anywhere and because i have no idea who Christophers wife is i cant confirm anything without Ellen being there, which she isnt. If anyone could shed some light i would be most greatful. |
