Can anyone help my second cousin (found through rootwebs!) find her great great gran please apparently born Bermondsey area married to John (Henry) Hart. Cant find the marriage or a birth. The lady is shown on great grandads birth cert as Sarah Hart late Bews formerly Grier. We have found a Sarah Grier born in Bermondsey on IGI but the date does not fit. Any help finding a birth or marriage much appreciated. The only thing is from the 1861 census she was 25, 1871 33)Death cert. 8/10/1871 Age 35. . The eldest daughter:- Sarah Florence Hart was born 5 May 1860 so have looked for marriages 1859/1860/1861. The only one I found was in July/Aug/Sept 1860 for John Hart, Bermondsey 1d 89. but when I applied for the cert they told me wife was not Sarah Bews/Grier. I am wondering if they got married in a Synagoge as Gt Gt Grandfather, John (Henry) Hart was born in Hoxton 1831/2. I have also looked on 1837.

Synagogue marriages are still registered in the usual way and should appear in the GRO indexes. Is it possible that Sarah married before, to a Mr Grier? Have you found a likely Bews marriage? nell

Hi, so you think her birth name may have been Bews? I shall ask cousin about that but she seems to have had a real good look!

No, though its a possibility. I thought she might have been married to a Mr Grier, then Mr Bews and the cert didn't have enough space to add her maiden name too - or perhaps after all those husbands, she'd forgotten it. nell

Might it be worth getting the birth cert of another sibling to see if the previous names for Sarah match up? We have birth certs for five siblings, but only on one cert does it mention that the mother was married previously!! Sarah

Many thanks guys. I will pass on the Grier sisters. Though they do seem to match in with the Sarah that I found her and she said was not right date???? Cousin just mailed me to say she has found an Alexander La Tour Bews baptised Dr Williams Library, Bermondsey 1832 - so this looks like the first hubby for old Sarah Grier. Dr Williams library was that non-conformist lot wasnt it? Wonder if she married there so it doesnt come up elsewhere? Thanks for all you help, I and she much appreciate it!

The Sarah Grier in Bermondsey was bap in 1834, which isn't that far off. I don't think your cousin should dismiss her out of hand, but I suppose when the marriage cert(s) turn up, it all depends on her fathers name! Sarah

Heather, regardless of whether Sarah married in a non-conformist chapel/synagogue, mosque or register office, if she married after 1 July 1837, she should be in the GRO index of marriages. nell

Many thanks everyone, have passed everything on to cousin who is most grateful. She thanks you all. She has come across an Alexander Bews now who died in Rotherhithe, so is following that one up. You are all great guys!
