I just thought, I suppose that the boy isnt the son of the wife's first marriage? I had 2 children in one of my lots 1881 shown as their mother's first husbands name and then in 1891 they turn up with the stepfathers surname. Had the wife been married previously?? Mind you if he were only a year old, thats a quick second marriage!

Thanks Sarah and Deborah. I was hoping that he was born Ruff but as you say he was born with another surname. I have looked for possible Ruff relations in London who may have been his parents but no luck there. I will search freebmd as you surgested and see if I have any luck there. Thanks again for your help.

Hello Margaret assuming he was born George if you do a search on Freebmd BIRTHS using no surname just George in first name box and district Kensington, county ALL someone aged one on 1891 census should have been born between 1889 6 April and 1890 5 April so on the dates check AMJ 1889 to AMJ 1889 etc right through to AMJ 1890. It lists all the Georges born in this area you can print this out and may find a surname that is connected. If not handy to refer back to at a later date Deborah

Sorry Margaret, I was cooking/eating!! Not sure that you are going to be able to trace this boy at birth, but here are some clues: Name in 1891: George S Ruff Name in 1901: Stanley Ruff I wondered if his first names at birth were George Stanley? There is only one birth reg that fits exactly for age: Name: Peardon, George Stanley Record Type: Births Quarter: June Year: 1890 District: Kensington County: Greater London London Middlesex Volume: 1a Page: 114 Though Stanley is aged 10, not 11 in 1901!! By the way, Alice the nurse child in 1891 has changed to Olive by 1901 when she is still with the family. Only other thing I can think of would be to see of George/Stanley Ruff married and who he gave his father as - but I bet he said it was George Ruff! Am still thinking............... Sarah

Would you like to post the family details from the census? It might be easier to have ideas if we can see the names (though I reserve the right to change that last remark after I've seen the names! lol) Sarah

Thats a toughie. The fact is that they have two children who are fostered/adopted. In my family at that time, if a child turned up as fostered or adopted on the census it was usually the child of another family member who had died. And thats where I personally would start looking. If the husbands brother had died say, then the boy would have the same surname anyway. But its unusual also to have the other child as fostered. Though there are many scenarios that could fit arent there? Hope someone can give you better advice than me!

In the 1891 census I have found a family and they have an adopted son age 1 who has there surname and a girl nurse child age 1 with a different surname. I want to know if the adopted son would have had a different name at birth because I am unable to find his birth anywhere. and if this is the case how will I find his birth name?
