10/12/1865 Emma Plume was born Rainham, father's name Henry Plume mother Jane Plume formerly ?? (can't read the name). 1871 Census Emma Blume ( mis-transcribed name??) is a visitor at the home of James and Maria Wakeling in Upminster. 1881 Census Emma Wakeling is a servant at the home of Henery Triggs in Upminster. 12/05/1883 Emma Maria Wakeling Plume married Arthur Wright born Barkingside, her father is named as James Wakeling and she was living in Hornchurch. 11/10/1890 Emma Maria Wakeling Wright married Charles Bennett, her father is named as James Plume and she was living in Hornchurch. 1891 Census Emma and Charles Bennett living in Hornchurch. 1901 Census Emma and Charles Bennett living in Salford, Lancashire. By the time of the 1871 census both Jane and Henry Plume have vanished. I did however find a Jane Plume who died in the 1st Qtr of 1866 and wondered if Emma was sent to live with the Wakelings. Do you clever people agree that this is the same Emma??? Grateful for any suggestions/ideas etc. Thanks Carol

Carol, Have you looked for the marriage of Henry Plume and Jane ? I'm wondering if Jane's maiden name was Wakelin? Or possibly the Wakelins were witnesses. James and Maria Wakelin's marriage certificate may hold some clues too. I think there is a strong possibility that this is the same Emma. It will be interesting to know the names of any children she had. June xx

Hi June I have looked for the marriage of Henry and Jane but I am having trouble deciphering the previous name of Jane. It definitely isn't Wakeling though!! I have found a family with Henry and Jane as the parents in Cranham on the 1861 census, by the time the 1871 census and the later censuses came around they have vanished!!! Carol

Looks to me that she is the same person with all the names. I think I found the right family on the 1861: Charles Plume abt 1860 Cranham, Essex, England Son Cranham Essex Eliza Plume abt 1851 Stanway Daughter Cranham Essex Henry Plume abt 1830 Stanway Head Cranham Essex Henry Plume abt 1850 Stanway Son Cranham Essex Jane Plume abt 1830 Colchester Wife Cranham Essex Phebe Plume abt 1857 Little Warley, Essex, England Daughter Cranham Essex Walter Plume abt 1853 Stanway Son Cranham Essex Then in 1871: Charles Plume abt 1860 Raynam Son Mile End Old Town London Frederick Plume abt 1864 Raynam Son Mile End Old Town London Henry Plume abt 1831 N Head Mile End Old Town London Phebe Plume abt 1857 Colchester Daughter Mile End Old Town London It shows Henry is married. If Jane had died it should say he is a widower. The death record you found for Jane Plume would suggest she died shortly after Emma was born and maybe her father couldn't take care of an infant so placed her with another family. Emma assumed her foster or adopted parents name but for the marriage record she had to give her actual birth surname. Maybe at the time of her first marriage she didn't know what the real name of her father was so used James Wakeling. Basically, names on marriage certificates is the result of the information provided to the registration clerk by the bride and groom. So, whatever Emma told them is what was recorded. Does that help at all? Rose

Hi Rose and thanks. I had found the Cranham family. I had thought the same about Jane, it seems a logical reason. What has been throwing me was the change of her father's name from Henry to James Plume. I've given myself a headache puzzling over Emma!!..lol Carol

Hi Carol, I believe I found Henry Plume on the 1881, unmarried, inmate, living in the Mile End Old Town Workhouse. Then there's a death record for Henry Plume Age at death: 55 Quarter: June Year: 1884 District: Mile End Old Town County: London Middlesex Volume: 1c Page: 355 Rose
