I have this lovely but extremely annoying surname in my tree, and I'm trying desperately to get further back on it. see below....

Name is DUSOLEI/DUSOLIE/DUSOLAI/DUSOLEIL/DU SOLEIL. It enters my tree when my gggg grandparents, Jane Dusolei and James Phillips marry in Soho in 1824. I know that this definitely their marriage because, although their daughter my ggg grandmother, Sarah Jane, was born in 1826, I have the birth certificate of her sister, Rosina born in 1843 (found them on the 1851 and 1861). According to the IGI, Jane's parents were Thomas and Sarah nee Giles. Sarah - I'm stuck with her. I have her death in 1838 aged 68 in Brighton (no idea how she got down there), but can't find a definite birth. Thomas was born in 1763 (on the IGI as Dusolai) in St Anne Soho. I have the baptism certificate which someone found for me in the Huguenot Library (it was used to confirm his ancestry to gain entry into this school). His parents were John and Mary. That's where that line stops. I have found in the Huguenot church in Westminster (on the IGI again) a Jean Du Soleil being born to a Jean and Marie in 1752 and I think that this is the same couple. But I can't find their marriage. Whenever I google the surname - I come up with this annoying porn star called Lucas Dusolei and I can't get much further because no one else seems to be researching this line in the UK. It's all France and Belgium (on Geneanet). I have contacted all those who I have been able to contact, and they are all researching Catholics, mine were Protestant.... I really need tips, advice, help on trying to get further back to these people - I would love to know Marie's maiden name. I would love to go further back with Sarah Giles too. Grrrrr! I hate these people!! My Phillips line has also hit a brickwall - I got back to James (husband of Jane Dusolei) being born 1802 in Netley, Hampshire - so I found one in Hound which is very close.... BUT I can't get further back on that cos his parents don't seem to have come from there (parents were Thomas and Ann). Please please please help in any shape or form! Chloe

Yes, I have, thanks. They're also on the IGI. Thomas seems to have had brothers John, George and Peter and sisters Mary and Elizabeth - I think - but no one is researching them at all!!! Chloe

If they were Huguenots, which seems likely, they were quite possibly French, and came to England when Louis XIV (coincidentally nicknamed roi du soleil, or sun king) revoked the Edict of Nantes in 1685, which had tolerated them. Many of them settled in the East End of London where they brought their skills as silk weavers. There's a Huguenot Society of Great Britain which has some family history information: http://www.huguenotsociety.org.uk/family/ nell

Chloe This thought probably isnt worth the effort of posting it, but they may not ALWAYS have been Protestants. Old Crone

Hello I found this ... William HAILES Born about 1799 of Westminster, London, England. Married 17 APR 1824 Elizabeth DUSOLEI at Saint Anne Soho, Westminster, London, England. She was born about 1802 of Westminster, London, England. on http://www.hales.org/hw06.htm Possibly a part of the same family? If you googe the surname, but put -'lucas dusoleil' -porn it gets rid of a lot of the junk. The double inverted commas make Google treat the two elements of the name as a single, joint, item; the minus signs tell Google to miss out any hits with those items. Christine

Thanks for all your suggestions and info guys. It's very true that they might not have always been protestants, but to be Huguenots they must have been around the time of the persecution and the people I've contacted around that time are all Catholics. Does that make sense? Thanks again Chloe x
