Excellent Elly! I was looking on Hugh Wallis to try and find him and then I couldn't find Wittering. At least I know there were some Bakers there Jeanette x

Now we might be getting somewhere (thanks to Jess!) International Genealogical Index / British Isles - 2 Select records to download - (50 maximum) 1. EDWARD BAKER - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Marriage: 17 DEC 1788 Wittering, Northampton, England 2. ELIZABETH BAKER - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Marriage: 22 JUL 1785 Wittering, Northampton, England Ok, you don't have a name to connect either of these with yours, but it does look like Wittering, NORTHAMPTON Elly

Hi Helen His name was John Baker - nice common name! - and he was born c1804. He gives his age as 57 on the census and his occupation is a Poulterer. They are living in Hull on this census. I'm not sure when they came to Hull but my 2x great Grandmother was born in Boston, Lincs c1840

Peterboro is Northampton now I think. There is a Wittering in Sussex, but too far away. J

My 3x great Grandfather gives his place of birth as Witring, Lincolnshire on the 1861 census. I can't find anywhere in Lincs called Witring or anything like it. The nearest I've got is from Multimap which tells me that Wittering is in Peterborough. But I can't find out what county that was in in the early 1800's. He died before the 1871 census so this is the only clue I have to his birthplace. Any of you brainy peeps got any ideas? Jeanette x
