Hi again, does anyone know that if a Jewish wedding ceremony took place in England, would it still be registered in the normal way? Thanks Lisa

Lisa Yes, after civil registration was introduced in 1837 ALL marriages had to be registered. There are some Jewish weddings on the www.familysearch.org site, and you might find what you want on the Jewish Gen site as well. nell PS any of these surnames ring a bell - HART, JOEL, PHILLIPS?

Hi Nell, fantastic! thought as much but wasn't 100% sure, sorry the surnames don't ring any bells, Pinhay is my married name, do you have some in your family? Thanks again Lisa

Joan It does not have to be registered separately - but it does have to be registered. So as well as the Jewish records it should appear in the GRO marriage indexes. nell

Lisa My husband's great-grandmother on his mother's mother's side was Jewish but married out of her faith. She came from a line of East End fishmongers. nell

Nell Same in my case, I just can't find any registration of the marriage and it was relatively recently, I am beginning to wonder if it ever took place, I think not maybe? Lisa

Hi Nell I have names and the suspected year, have checked on 1837 to no avail, I can't post the details on here though. Lisa

Fair dos. You can e-mail me privately if you want, but I suspect that if its not on the GRO index, it's because either the names are different from what you expected, or because the wedding occurred in a reg. district you didn't expect. Jewish weddings can be performed in private houses as well as synagogues. nell
