June I thinks we have all come across more than one occasion where the truth has been bent a little. Ages normally get altered to suit the age of the partner in a marriage. Neither of them wish to appear much older or younger than the other. Victor

Much more sophisticated to say 22 when you are 17, than to say 21 !! (too obvious!) Sarah

On 2 occasions, I have a fictional father entered on a marriage certificate when the person was born illegitimately.

My g-g-mother appears to have been born early in 1851 (in time for the census). In subsequent censuses she was: (1861) 9, (1871) 21, (1881) 27, (1891) 33, (1901) 43. When she got married in 1884 she shed a few years to be 26 (i.e. 1 year younger thatn the 1881 census, 3 years earlier!). This may have had something to do with the fact that her husband was only 20 when they married. Christine
