Can anyone help me with the occupation of William Hawke b. 1823 in North Hill Cornwall, living in Tavistock Devon in 1871. I think it says Miner & ..... the second word looks like Head but im not sure.

Could it be Miner and Hewer? It's very difficult to read so could be completely wrong. Kath. x

That makes sense, just googled Hewer, its something to do with mining. Thanks Kath.

Just had another thought. The second word looks as if it could be Hind, which is a farm servant (a bit up from an agricultural labourer), but if it is, then I don't know what the first word is. There does seem to be a few agr. labourers on the same page though. (maybe he did a bit of both). I have ancestors in Northumberland who worked on farms, but there was a lot of mining on the land as well. Kath. x

Thats also possible he was an ag lab & inn keeper in 1881!

Was just about to say that, as I've just looked at the 1881. Kath. x

The more I look at it the more I think it is Miner and Hind. Both fit into the area as on the same page there are Ag. Labourers, and if you look at the next few pages there a quite a few copper miners. Kath. x

That seems to make sense given what you have said and the fact he was an ag lab in 1881. Thanks again Kath.
