I found this web address on an old thread about dating photos. I haven't looked at the site so I don't know if it will help, but I hope so. http://www(.)rogerco.freeserve(.)co.uk Kath. x

Hi Chris, Sorry im not that good at dating photos but i have heard that you can find out the year by the photographers name or company printed on the back of the photo. If it says a name then you can search the internet for information on the years that, that photographer produced photos in. Hope this helps you a little. Amy p.s. hope what ive written makes sense!!

Been into this site, and it is good. I was able to date a couple of my photographs, by fashions worn and inscriptions on the back. I had guessed who they may be, and was right in my choice. Three of my photos are nearly 200 yrs old. Passed down through the family. Ann

Your local library will probably have a book on dating old photos. Clothes are a guideline. Try this site: http://www*cartes*freeuk*com/time/date.htm replace * with . nell

Hi me! You will be lucky to get your photo dated to an exact year, but good luck! Am worried about Piggin's 200 year old photos. I thought photography was only invented in the 1830's or 1840's and only became commercially viable in the late 1840's??? Am totally prepared to be shot down in flames over this...lol..... aaagghhhhhh!! Sarah

Not sure if this is same site as mentioned above, but this is the one I usually use - and if you get stuck you can email Roger Vaughan (address on the site) with a copy of the photo and he will have a go at dating it for you. He very kindly helped me in the past. cartes.fsnet(dot)co(dot)uk Leah
