Need anyones tips on where to look. I have a Charles Marks born 1818 Newington Died 1871 Lambeth. He was married to a Isadora Noble in 1866. I have found Isadora on the 1881 Census but can't find hubby on any census before that. I've checked 1871 / 1841 / 1851 any advice welcome & thanks in advance Annie

Marriage details are on Free BMD Sept 1866 at Bethnal Green. Looked up all the Isadora's in the 1861 census but could not see her, what was her father's name and occupation from the marriage cert and I will see if I can find them for you. Irene

Sue 1871 Transcribed as Menkes I'm really confused, how does that work then? the first names are correct but dates are out on a couple of the children. How is it also transcribed to Menkes? Thanks in advance Annie

Annie, methinks you must be fairly new to this - names are very very often mistranscribed. The census is copied from the enumerators collected forms. It was a case of someone reading someones poor writing and making a guess at the names. Ditto the kids, depends on when they born and when the census was taken. A child born in March when the April census was taken could appear a year older. A child born in May when an April census is taken could appear a year younger.
