Nell - I did manage to find that website (via google) - After looking through all 196 ties - I've whittled it down to 4...which means that I'm further ahead than I was earlier, but no nearer to knowing precise information. Thanks for all your replies thus far Charlotte

If you type 'army ties' into Google there are lots of sites to do with this and the first one shows pictures of the different ties. Perhaps your mother could look at this and see if she recognises the tie. Kath. x

Okay - what about a different track... My mum said that my grandfathers regimental tie was maroon and blue striped.....Is there anywhere that I can find which regiment this belonged to?? - Or would there be more than one...... Thanks again for any help Charlotte

Thanks for both responses. My grandfather died in 1982. After just speaking to my mum about the Black Watch information - she doesn't think that was him (He didn't get promoted up to Lt.). My mum has one photo of him in his army uniform (#1 dress) and knows that he was in the artillery. As for trying to find out his regiment and number - thats a brick wall - my grandmother did have that information - but she died in July last year (I only found out this information out a few weeks ago!!) - My uncle lived with his mother until her death, so he may still have this information at the house - The only problem being family rifts - I haven't seen or heard from my uncle in 20 years - and he might have moved.......think I'm definately at a brick wall with this one. During the War it was not unusual for men to be posted to regiments all over the country and not necessarily near where they were born or lived. Do you have a number for him? Keith

Is there no one in the family who might have old army paybooks or medals, which could give you his army number? Perhaps an old photograph which would indicate which regiment he was in. If you could find his number and regiment, you can send away for his army records, which these days include photocopies of all the documents the army hold about him and is well worth the £25 cost. However they will not do a search for them unless you have his regiment and number. Kath. x

Hi All, I'm trying to find information about my grandfathers service in the Army during WW2. The only information I have is that he was an RSM. I don't know when he joined up or go demobbed nor which regiment he was in. Following on from a previous post by someone I did have a look at the London Gazette website and did find an entry for my grandfathers name - But, I don't think this could be correct - my grandfather was born and probably based around the Brighton area, but this gazette entry had him being an RSM of Black Watch (which are in Scotland)!!! With the very little information that I have - is there anywhere (online or otherwise) where I can find a bit more about it. Thanks in Advance Charlotte
