Hiya, Just wondering if any of you knew how to go about finding out if an address had once been used as a maternity home for girls? if it was it was possibly ran by the church. Just come across birth mums addy and trying to eliminate possibilities. any tips will be wildly appreciated ;-) jude

It would be listed in local directories of the time. You might find it on this site: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp or you might need to visit the relevant local library/records office/local history centre nell

hi jess, well. I am looking for birth family.....i have come across my mothers addy when she gave birth(middlesbrough). She was born in middlesex and when i have researched for a marriage best possible match is london area!! i know my adoption was a church adoption and there is a little history about middlesborough being abit of a hot spot for homes for unmarried mums (especially from ireland). Anyway if it turns out the address was used as a home for mums. I can probably stop looking in the north east area for her as she probably returned home. PS how have you all got interesting board names, can you change your name for board use??

Hi Joanne, There's a lovely lady on the Records board who had a thread with just what your looking for. She helped me with a few addresses of homes. Her name is Em Mycock. I'll have a look on the board and see if I can nudge it to the top for you. Have done it 6.45 pm her name is Meriel on her thread. Best wishes :0) Jenny
