Hi Amanda Did your rellies definitely live in the town of Guisborough, or is it possible they lived in the surrounding villages? The reason I'm asking is that those who live in the villages are registered as though they were born/married/died in Guisborough, and not at their own village/church. The nearest villages are: Lingdale, Boosbeck, Margrove Park, Brotton, Loftus, Moorsholm, Skelton, Upleatham, Slapewath. I think villages on the other side of Guisborough, such as Great Ayton and Stokesley come under Middlesbrough administration. As I am only about 7-10 miles from all of these places, I could scout round other cemeteries for you and get photos if that would help?? Dianne p.s. Have just had a look on Ancestry for you and there are various John Olivers in the surrounding villages. They seem to be in farming or mining. A Lay Preacher could also be a sideline occupation to one of these occupations. Another source of info could be Redcar & Cleveland Council telephone no 01642 444000 who could put you through to the cemetery department, who in turn could maybe provide details of exact cemetery and grave number and location. p.p.s. Have just had a look on burials index and come up with the following possibilities, all within a short distance of Guisborough. All of them named as John Oliver though, none with a second name of Henry. 29th Dec 1893 Age 60 Guisborough St Nicholas 5th Feb 1897 Age 60 Skelton All Saints 1st Sept 1900 Age 67 Skelton All Saints 4th November 1906 Age 89 North Ormesby Holy Trinity (this is on the outskirts of Middlesbrough) 19th July 1927 Age 80 Coatham Christ Church (this is in Redcar) Dianne |

Recently visited the Guisborough, Cleveland area hoping to find my Husbands, Oliver relatives who were Methodists . Went to the cemetery hoping on the off chance I might find some people. Found one so wasn't a completely wasted journey. While wandering round suddenly thought, would they of been buried there if they were Methodists? I've been searching for hubbys gt grandad John henry Oliver who I have been told was a lay preacher, for nearly 3 years now and due to his family not approving of me 'digging' for info have no one to ask so hoped I might of come across him in the cemetery. The lodges at the cemetery were all boarded up so couldnt ask there. Where would be the best place to contact regarding those buried there? |
