Can anyone tell me anything about the Royal Army Medical Corps? My ggrandfather Frank Ernest Walker was in this unit of the army. I am stimied trying to find out any more. I have a picture of him in uniform that was taken in the first world war and also what I think is his medal card from the National Archives website. The card doesnt give the name of the unit he was attached to- just this regiment number 68377. I have tried googling, but most of the links that come up are innactive or broken. Where else can I find information?

Teresa This is what I found by googling: 'RESEARCHING THE HISTORY OF THE ARMY MEDICAL SERVICES The museum is able to assist you in researching the history of the Army Medical Services. Dependant on the amount of work involved this research may attract a charge and in the case of extensive photocopying there will be a charge per page. Initially you should contact the museum enclosing a stamped, self addressed envelope. The main archive of the RAMC, The RAMC Muniment Collection, is held in the care of Archives & Manuscripts, Wellcome Library, 183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE. Tel 020 7611 8888. www.wellcome.ac.uk The Museum holds a copy of the catalogue for the collection and you are advised to contact the museum where members of staff can appraise you of the contents and the catalogue numbers. The Museum itself holds an extensive working archive and library and can help in the following fields: Personnel Units Uniforms and Insignia Medical equipment Medical aspects of the various wars and campaigns since 1660. PERSONNEL Medical Officers The museum holds service details of those officers who held a regular commission in the medical services of the British Army from 1660-1960. The amount of detail varies and includes promotion dates, postings, honours and awards. Officers who did not hold a regular commission and who served up to the end of World War 1 may be amongst those records held in the National Archive ' webaddress: www*.*army*.*mod*.*uk/medical/ams_museum/ams_research/ remove * to use. nell

May seem obvious, but as you are in Canada, where it says stamped addressed envelope, a couple of International Reply Coupons should do it.
