Yes Colin- I know that feeling of wanting to scream trying to track down the relatives. I thought I had found my (paternal) Great Grandmother - Sarah Turner who married my G.Grandpa Joseph Parker in 1880. So went ahead - ordered her birth certificate, yes you've guessed - wrong one. It turned out dear Sarah although only 20 when she married Joseph Parker had previously been married at 15 (but lied on the 1st marriage cert saying she was 18) had a couple of kids, lost the first husband (also called Joseph) and then married my G.Grandpa. I was then able to discover her birth name was actually Pattison and not Turner as I had been following! Finally have the correct birth certificate for her, plus marriage cert showing she was a widow at the time of her 2nd marriage. Think we have to face up to it - our relatives were awfully good at bending the truth, changing their names and so on. I even had one nutter of a relative who changed not only HIS name from Frederick to 'Truth' - but did the same to his young son - also a Frederick. Mmm, two TRUTHS in one family. Anyway Colin, good luck in your hunt for the correct relative. Lyn

is it possible she's married before - but didn't mention on the 1st certificate - or maybe the eldest daughter's mother died, and the father managed to marry someone with similar detials?

I'm so mad, I'm reading to dump my family and pinch someone else's I had loads of help last week trying to find my Hester Hannah Jones and William Roberts. I got the certificate this morning of their second daughter to compare the info I had for their eldest daughter. Child's name correct fathers name correct address correct father occupation - a bit iffy mother's name - was hoping for Hester Hannah Jones, or slight variation - she's Ettie Roberts on 1901 census - that's fine Ettie can be shortform I reckon for Hester or Ester. But on second birth certificate she's Hetty Roberts formerly VINCENT............ Vincent, Vincent, Vincent, where the blinking hell has that come from........... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr Am going to have a big sulk, and try and work some sense into it Have checked 1881, 1891 and found a Ester Vincent, right age, right area but by 1901 she's married and is Ester Harger, so she's not mine. Double Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Will repost later when I'm not so cross with Hester Hannah Jones/Roberts/Vincent/Hetty or Ettie - whatever on earth she's gonna call herself next I really don't know Sarah
