Victor / Carol Thanks for the replies. These are helpful, and I guess I need to have another trawl through the Census' The marriage cert doesnt say deceased (but I have others that do) - I just wondered if it didnt say deceased then was it 90% certain that he was still alive - clearly not! I guess I need to find a birth certificate for George - that may crack this open. Thanks Again ... P

If it said deceased you could be pretty sure he was (though people do lie if say he wouldnt give permission). Trouble is I have some marriage certs where the father is definitely dead but isnt shown as such on the cert. The fact that they married in a Methodist church would seem more likely they actually attended it as parishoners (rather than going to any C of E church to marry). So I would think that the family would have been known and hence the fathers condition! PS I have some Welsh border Grubbs.

If the father is stated as alive or dead at time of marriage depends on what the bride and groom told the registrar. I dont think that the registrar always asked if the father was still alive. You may already have this from the 1901 Wales Charles Dobbs abt 1874 St Mellons, Cornwall, England Boarder Pontypridd Glamorgan Thomas Dobbs abt 1859 Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England Boarder Pontypridd Glamorgan George Grubb abt 1883 Walsall, Staffordshire, England Son Pontypridd Glamorgan Mary Grubb abt 1844 Wellington, Herefordshire, England Head Pontypridd Glamorgan Thomas Grubb abt 1882 Walsall, Staffordshire, England Son Pontypridd Source information: RG13/5002 Registration district: Pontypridd Sub-registration district: Llanwonno ED, institution, or vessel: 15 Folio: 175 Page: 11 (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 55

Hi All I have just received a Marriage Cert, for my Gt.Gt.Grandparents, with the aim of tracing my Gt.Gt.Gt Grandfather. George Grubb (age 26) marries Mary Ann Brewer (age 22) at Blaina Methodist Church, South Wales in October 1909. George's Father is down as William Grubb, Railway Plate Layer. If he was dead at this time would this show on the cert (i.e have deceased in brackets) ?? I am confident that these are indeed my Gt.Gt and GT.Gt.GT Grandfathers (we have confirmed my Gt.Gt. Grandmothers details). The problem is I cannot find any concrete evidence for George or William in any of the census' There are two possible Georges but none tat I can connect to a William. Any suggestions ????
