Some of you will know that Fiona McColgan kindly found my Carter family in 1861, as McCarthy. Yes, they changed their name! I couldn't find Charles Albert Carter's birth cert {neither could the GRO when he applied in 1936), but with this new info, another lovely person found a birth index for Charles A McCarthy, registered St George Southwark. (I had reason to believe Southwark was his birthplace and had an address from an old family tree, despite the fact that Charles said he was born Islington/Bow on other censuses). So I sent for the cert and got an e-mail back today from GRO saying it wasn't the correct father's name on the cert - but I re-checked and they quoted my ref as St George Hanover Square. Oh poo, I thought. checked my printout of the order (thank goodness I made one) and it is clearly St George Southwark. have just shelled out some more on 1837online which confirms reg. district as St Geo S. and volume 1d (St Geo Hanover Squ is volume 1a). So have now e-mailed the GRO back with this info. I am having sooo much trouble with this man!!! nell |

Its always the men that gives us problems, isn't it? Somehow, it should be the women as it is they that change their names but no, it is the men EVERYTIME!! Men, who needs 'em? ok , Ok maybe we do... Jess |
