'been pursuing your mob most of the day' Tony mate, knock yourself out!! From Scotlands People where I've already spent too much money, found her birth but her parents marriage just isn't right, James would have only been 11!:- Mary Robinson, bn 29 Dec 1856 in Galashiels, Father James Robinson, Mother Elizabeth Happer. 5 Mar 1842 James Robinson/Elizabeth Happer married at Earlston. Also, I can't find an Elizabeth born to them between 1851 - 1856 and no Alexander either from 1842 - 1860. Getting more confused by the minute! Regards, Brenda

Hi again Brenda, been pursuing your mob most of the day, could not find Elizabeths sister Mary after 1881,so began to wonder if they had bailed out of the UK as the wifes GGrandparents did! Found them in Pennsylvania on 1900 census, seems William Hicks went there in 1886 and rest of the family in 1887. Oddly enough their first child born in USA they named Alexander! John Hicks + Mary Robinson Dec 1877 Chester/le/street 10a 608 John Hicks mar 1879 Chester/le/street 10a495 Robert Hicks Dec 1884 ' ' ' 10a 531 Hicks William Hd 46 Coal miner ' Mary wife 44 ' John son 20 Coal miner ' Robert son 16 Coal miner Alexander son 12 coal miner William son 9 Joseph son 6 Thomas son 5 Mary.E. dau 2 Margaret dau 10months. If you can't find them send your mail and I will keep a copy for a few days. Best Regards Tony PS My lot are all from Northumberland and north of the border!!

Thanks all, lots more options at least and they look interesting, but none fit completely with what I already know. I think Tony might be the closest but the Grandchildren are confusing... as is her age, she should be between 25 and 30; but I do know that Thomas was 'home alone' on the 1881 census. I can also access the ones you mention, now I have more to go on, thanks. Elizabeth and Thomas had Margaret Ann in 1876, Isabella in 1881, James in 1883 and Martha in 1887. To the best of my knowledge they had no other, older children. I looked at Elizabeth and Thomas wedding cert when I got home. They were married in July of 1872, she states she is 21, making her birth year 1851 - subsequent census put her between 1851 - 1856... and in all of these Robinsons mentioned there is still no Alexander! Tony - Is it too much to hope that your Cummings family are from Durham too? Unfortunately, James Robinson is a very common name! I always get a million results on Ancestry, and if I filter it further then I get nothing! Such is life, but I shall persevere! Thanks all, Brenda

Hi Maureen, On Elizabeth and Thomas’s wedding cert her father is listed as James Robinson. I thought it was odd that he was listed as a boarder, but then, so is Anthony Cummings and he is the brother of Thomas. The column you refer to is “Relationship to Head”, Anthony should say “brother”, I’m pretty sure James Robinson should say “FIL”. Maybe it was just that enumerator’s style?? Regards, Brenda Edit: just seen other replies…. Will read them and post further, thanks.

Struggling with this family and have been for a while. James Robinson, born about 1831, North Shields, Northumberland. I only have him on two census, 1891 and 1901, both in Durham. In 1891 he is living on his own and listed as single; in 1901 he is living with his daughter Elizabeth Cummings and listed as widowed. Elizabeth was born between 1851 – 1855 (depending on census) in Scotland, but I have searched extensively for her birth without luck. She married Thomas Cummings in the early 1870’s in Durham (I have the cert, just not with me right now). The witness is Alexander Robinson, not sure of the relationship as I can’t find him either! This is a direct line for me and I’ve been banging my head on a brick wall for over a year now….. here’s hoping for a miracle! Thanks, Brenda
