I spent hours the other day trying to Mother and infant daughter, 2 months old, on the 1901 (I love it when you have to really dig deep and then find the answer). Anyway to get to the point I found my single Mum working in service for a Church of England Clergyman and Schoolmaster, and his family at a Church of England private school. (Only three staff, herself as Cook domestic and two younger girls as housemaids). Her baby was with a family in her home town (no relation as I know of yet) relationship to family was 'Nurse Child'. Does anyone know the correct translation of 'Nurse Child'? Thanks Gaynor Ann %3A-%29

My gg-gfather was one of five assorted children of 10 and under who were said to be 'boarders' in 1861. Head of household was a blind woman!

Hi Gaynor Ann My great Grandfather's wife was a nurse child on the 1881 census. Her mother was working away as a house servant and was single. I had thought that there was no connection between her and the family that were looking after her until recently. I contacted somebody who is researching this family and she was able to tell me that that the couple she was staying with were her Aunt (mother's sister) and Uncle. Jeanette x

Foster child, in modern parlance. Often they became unofficially 'adopted' and brought up as one of their own children.
