Hi Jo That's strange that you couldn't get a copy of the inquest findings for 75 years when all inquests are held in public. Victoria

Hi Dawn I believe that the Coroners' reports often don't survive depending on the county - check your relevant county archive office/library. I have managed to obtain 2 inquest reports from newspapers - one in 1877 held in a cottage and just a couple of paragraphs of info and another, from 1908, with a full report into my Gt Grandfather who committed suicide in a rather unpleasant way in prison involving a pillow case, some string, a chair stood on a bed and a gas fitting - I'll let you work it out! Good luck!

Got the newspaper report on my great-grandfather's inquest in 1879 from local newspaper in the Islington Local History Centre. It didn't say much, but had my gt grandmother giving evidence as well as witnesses (he collapsed in the street). Interestingly, the verdict according to the papers was 'rupture of the aorta' whereas the actual death cert says 'disease of the heart and blood vessels'. nell

I only found about ours through the cert. Dad had always said that one of his dads siblings had died in a childhood accident and noone believed him. His dad didn't talk much about family. When I spoke to dads cousin she knew of the accident but had it that the girls head had been chopped off in the butchers shop!!!!!! Turned out her and older brother went out to play and two and were by a shop (butchers) and they had placed a butchers block at the side while they went to get the cart to pove it with. Two lads pushed the bloke on top of her killing her instantly, she was 2 and 9 months. Sent shivers down my spine when read the paper report. Be prepared for the unexpected. dawn

Kirsty I tried to find one for my gt aunt from 1892. Tried local Archives who couldn't find it, they suggested local Studies Library who found a copy of the newspaper article and also another local paper found another article for me. Think they destroy inquest reports after a while but not sure. Good Luck
