hi, Have looked and looked but can't find marrige between Samuel Baker and Elizabeth (Betsy) Black. She was born abt 1845, they had children Samuel 1862, Elizabeth 1864,Eliza 1867 (died 1877 I think) and Charles 1870. They are named as the parents of all but in 1872 aged 27 she marries Edward Richard Burns and is a spinster. Any help appreciated Jacqui |

Is it possible that they NEVER married, but acted like they had? She would have been 17 when she had her first child - and maybe they were not given consent by her parents so they lived in sin? |

Have you found them on any census? What areas are you looking at? If you've been looking on FreeBMD there's little info on about early 1860s. Are you sure that the 2nd marriage is definately her? |

Yup, it could be that they never married but I don't know what happened to him. The son and daughter from first marriage are living with them in 1881 as son in law and daughter in law. But that would be to the head of the family who was no blood relation and they are definitely not married. He is at the girls wedding though the father is named as Richard Baker but I don't think that is correct cos there is no marriage to a Richard either and Samuels father is named as Samuel and Elizabeth and her husband (whatever his name) are not together anywhere. They were born Shoreditch, Bethnal Green area Of Middx. Jacqui |

I'm not sure the dates tie in for these all to be the same family. The Elizabeth Black born c 1845 can't be the Elizabeth Burns in 1881 census as she is 29, so born c 1852 unless she lied on the census. The two down as in laws might be brother & sis in law instead of son & daughter because their ages are too close to the head & wife of family. Samuel Baker, 19 & Elizabeth Baker, 17 and h-o-h Richard Burns, 28 & wife Elizabeth Burns, 29. Which certificates do you have for them? There is an entry on FreeBMD for: Surname First name(s) District Vol Page Marriages Sep 1872 Black Elizabeth Shoreditch 1c 234 BURNS Edward Richard Shoreditch 1c 234 Not sure if any of that helps Rachel |

Rachel, I think she lied, in 1901 she is 56 and Richard is 49. Yes that is the marriage I have which is where it is stated that her father is George Black. When the daughter Elizabeth marries her father is stated as Richard Baker but I think that is a 'mash' of the two names. But to complicate things I can't find (Edward) Richard Burn(s) birth in Vauxhall Surrey (Lambeth) (from census') either. He never seems to be referred to as Edward and on one census he is Burns rest of the family Burn! Thanks Jacqui |

Don't know whether you know this, but 'son/daughter in law' was often used to mean what we nowadays call 'step son/daughter'. Kate. |
