Applying for a cert by post from the GRO

Hi All Thanks for your replies. Sorry I had to 'post and run' but the kids will insist on needing lunch when I'm in the middle of something! I've phoned them back and after another 10 minutes on hold, as Sam says, they wanted the GRO reference number, not an order reference number, which I could have told them on the first call had she explained that was what she wanted. Ho hum! I'm now even more confused than ever, cos they've now said that a letter is in the post to me with a partial refund as the certificate is the wrong one. When I asked what she meant, she said that the age at death is incorrect. Very odd as I never specified an age at death as I've no idea how old he will be. Ordering the cert was a pure shot in the dark. Anyway, I've explained all this to the woman and she is going to get someone to check again to see how they've come up with the fact the cert isn't mine. Lou x

Hi Vickie, Dont quote GRO reference indexes to a register office for any certificates, as this is not valid for their registeres...their's go on an ENTRY number,,,,quoting index numbers may get you a return of application and telling you it cant be found and to apply to Southport,,,,, To local Register Offices just give as much information as you can,,,names ,year, any maiden names etc,,,,, kay.

You usually need the GRO ref, I assume that is what they mean. I.e SMITH John, 6b, 285 Dec 1885 They would want the Vol (6b), page No (285) and year and quarter (Dec 1885). You can get these from FreeBMD or Ancestry (if they've been transcribed) or from 1837online. You can order certs without it but they charge you more. Apologies if you already knew this! Sam x

Hi Vikki I tried that before posting this thread but they said they can't do anything without the reference number for the order. Err....reference number? Where would that come from exactly if the order wasn't generated online? Lou

Has anyone done this? Until now, I've always used the local RO but this time, the cert I need is a London one and as the GRO don't accept the only card I have, I've applied by post. Does anyone know what the usual delivery time is for a postal application? I sent off for mine on May 18th and its still not here! Thanks Lou
