Richard Dockery, listed a father on birth certificate in 1908. Can't find anything likely in bmd or census. Elderly relatives would NOT tell the story but rumoured to be something terrible. Supposedly he gave some money for the childs future and then had no further contact. Birth cert indicates the mother was married to him but this may not be the case. The birth was in Chelsea. In 1909 the mother did marry and lived in Ceylon. Any suggestions on how to find out if there was a marriage or a divorce. Or would new husband have had to adopt? |

the surname has a lot of spellings, including some you wouldn't expect, like Docwra. The odder ones are often mistranscribed. For a sample of spellings, just do a random search for Dockery on the LDS site. Dockray seems to have become the commonest spelling by 1901 How did the mother describe herself when she married in 1909? Spinster or widow, and using what name? |

Regardless of what mother put on her 1st/2nd marriage cert, can you find her birth under her alleged maiden name? nell |
