Yvonne Sometimes the workhouse was the only place nearby with a hospital ward and they took sick people in there as well as just the very poor. Unless your family were wealthy enough to employ a nurse at home, this may have been the only place for her to be looked after. Tina |

Thanks Kay She died in 1885 aged 57 and she had been paralysed for 2 yrs on the 1881 census she is still living with her husband in Edinburgh And he is still at the same address on her death cert.She went to the North LEith Poor House. Yvonne Also there were no other children |

Yvonne,, As she was a woman it may be she was there because they had woman staff to look after womanly needs ;;?,!!!!!,( knowing her age could throw some light on that one)) if she wasnt mobile she may have developed other complications that she died of,,sooner rather than later ; and they could have paid for her to be looked after,,perhaps there were other's to be fed so they had to work; But what era are you at?? kay |

Does Anyone know anything about poor houses more a historical question really. I have an ancestor left in a poor house with paralysis and her husband seems okay and he comes to reclaim and bury her body. son also okay and quite well off. Maybe a problem with aprentage of son !? But why would they have left her there to die. Horrible. Yvonne |
