Ellen/Eleanor Green, my Gt Grandmother was born in 1866 in Manchester. She is not with her family on the 1871 census - why not?? Where is the poor little mite? Her older sister Ann has been palmed off on relatives living in Staffordshire and there is, coincidentally, an Industrial School about half a mile from where she is living. It has been suggested Eleanor might be in there - but why, aged 5?UPDATE: I have received Eleanor's BC today, her parents are Thomas Green and Mary Trafford - so I AM following the right family. But - where IS Eleanor in 1871, is she with her Trafford Grandparents in Cheshire? I would be very grateful for any more help - and thankyou,Victor, for the correct birth reference! Marjorie

Victor Thankyou very much for that. Oh, PULEASE dont tell me I am following the wrong line. But no, I'm not. I know that Eleanor Green, my Gt Grandmother, had sisters Mary Emma, Emily and Polly - they were still alive when I was a child and we visited them frequently. So, I think the Thomas and Jane you have found for me must be wrong, unless there is some fiendishly complicated scenario going on, which I havent yet fathomed.Mary Green died in childbirth in 1872 and that certificate is correct - it coincides with Emily's birthdate. Eleanor was back in the bosom of her family in 1881.Thomas had a new wife, Hannah. But TWO Thomas Greens, with almost identical children.....GRRRRR Marjorie

Marjorie, When were Ellens siblings born, as if it was after 1871, then obviously they would not be on the 1871 census. So the Household that victor found may in deed be the correct one and so you may be following the wrong line. Disappointing I know, but it is better to know now, that a lot longer down the line. I definately think you need to order the birth certificate.

Thankyou everyone for your input. In 1861, Thomas and Mary Green, both born Gawsworth, are living at Mollards Farm Gawsworth with their children Ann, born 1859 and John Thomas, born 1860. Also in the house are Thomas' brother William and his mother, Ann Green a widow.Thomas is a farmer. In 1871,Thomas and Mary, along with their children John Thomas, Samuel(1864 Manchester) and Mary Emma(1870, Manchester) are living at 51 Eliza Ann St, Manchester. Thomas is now a Railway Porter. Ann, born 1859 is not here on census night, but living with Uncle and Aunt in Cheadle Staffs, aged 12. Eleanor,b 1866 Manchester is nowhere to be found. In 1881 the family lives at 66 Paget Street, Thomas is now a Carter Hannah (second wife) John Thomas Green, son Samuel Green, son Mary Emma, daur Elleanor(sic) daur (aged 15, Assistant Housekeeper) Emily Green daur b 1872 Manchester (Mary, the first wife, died giving birth to Emily,in 1872 cert gives address as Eliza Ann St, wife of Thomas Green, Railway Porter). (Ann is now married - she appears to have given birth aged 13 in 1872!!!). I am awaiting a birth cert for John Thomas, to give me Mary's maiden name. As I say, I well remember Emily and Polly (Mary Emma) so I am sure this is the right family. I have accounted for everyone by 1891. Marjorie
