Why so old on marriage in mid 1920s?

Just looking at my (maternal) family and surprised to see many seem 'old' on marriage by standards of the day. Is there any likely reason for people marrying later in the mid 1920s? My Great Grandfather Edmund Arnold Brooks from Plymouth married aged 47 years, he was a self employed builder with his own house. The girl he married came from Liverpool - married at St Lukes Church Great Crosby - she was 33/34. I can imagine WW1 may have depleted the man a bit hence women marrying later, but any reason why men would marry in their late 40s early 50s first time around? My grandmother's father was in his 50s/60s when she was quite young, which must have been unusual then? And indeed travel so far afield to find a partner in the first place? Quite a few of my relatives seem to have done this? Thanks. |

It may not have been a first marriage, of course. Jess |

Usually its to do with circumstances - perhaps the man couldn't afford to marry/was working away from anywhere where he could meet a suitable bride/had commitments like ageing parents. Maybe his mother looked after him and he only married after she died and he needed someone to darn his socks. I have a great=uncle who married for the first and only time at 69! One of my gt gt grandfathers married when he was 46, but then I have lots of men marrying in their late teens/early 20s, because there was a baby on the way. nell |
