In the 1920’s or early 1930’s my grandfather who was a carter had an accident involving him being kicked by a horse. I am told he was injured to such an extent that his employer gave him a compensation payout, but he was never able to work again. This is all I know, I would have thought that following such serious injury he would have been taken to hospital. I have written to the hospital in Haslingden/Rawtenstall where he lived but I have been told that records do not exist for this period. I have also looked on A2A to see if I could find a record of his claim (assuming that it went through official channels) but I have found nothing and I am at a loss as to where to look next. I do not live in the East Lancs area and I am unable to travel to the area to carry out research. Even if I were able to do this I don’t know where to start looking. If anyone out there could suggest a starting point it would be really helpful as I know very little about my grandfather. TIA Daisy |

Hi Daisy,, have you checked that this hospital exsisted then,,often records are moved to hospitals further away for storage,,,but they are only obliged to keep records for a length of time,,, have you checked if any have been deposited at London Metropolitation Archives,,but as its a more modern time there will not be any medical info, but there may be records showing an addmission and discharge date.. As for the compensation thing if what is said true about the accident, then again records may no longer be around,,,it could have been just a gentlemens agreement,,, What about any news paper reports from the area??? Kay. |

Thanks Kay, I will certainly try writing to the London Metropolitan Archives and I will also contact the Rossendale Free Press and see if they are able to help me. Kind regards Daisy |
