Hi Lou www.scotlandspeople*gov.uk You have to buy credits, but it's not too expensive, and you get to see the records there and then, on screen. None of this waiting for the postman to come and then trying to beat the dog to the letterbox. Depending on how far back you are going, they also have old parish records on line. I think it's a great site. Tina

I've been sent some info this aft from a very distant rellie about my elusive Stonehouse Stuart. It indicates that he may have been born in Scotland c.1760, but I have no idea where The only small clue might be that his son, despite actually being born in Harwich, Essex, after he emigrated to Australia, he states on his own children's birth certs that he was born in Belmont???? Any suggestions?

If you go on scotlandspeople you have the date when born put in the name and about a 5 year search a list will come up you can view once you have paid £6 for 30 credits and you will get an idea in those years you will have to order certificate but you won't get anymore than what is there which is mother and fathers name

Golly, getting his mother and father would be a huge bonus, I have so much info on this guy from the early 1800's to his death in 1853 but nothing before! Thanks Marie, will email you!

If you are looking pre 1854 I would have a look on scotsorigins(.)com first as it will narrow down your results. You can search the OPR births and marriages by county and place which is very useful. (It's the LDS IGI) I then go onto scotlandspeople and to see if there's a downloadable image. If not I've sent for the extract £10. If you are looking for a birth after 1904 then you have to go through the GRO.

Thanks for that I'm looking at 1760 or thereabouts. I'm not even sure he was born in Scotland but the 2 other possible places I had for him have drawn blanks so am willing to consider any other options! Lou
