Prison Records ?

The prison register will have details of when prisoner was admitted, what charge, sentence etc. These are sometimes in the county records office. Not sure about more modern records, they might be still at the prison and you may need the permission of the Home office to see them. For people researching further back, Gloucester Records Office has a genealogy database with an index to people in Glos. gaol in the 19th century. If you find a relative (they list the parish so you can see if you have the right person), you can order a photocopy of the entry - which gives details of the crime and a - sometimes quite detailed - description, for a few £. nell

Hi all, I just want to add to this thread to lock it into my threads, as I am also looking for someone who was missing from his home on 1901 census night as he was an inmate in Chesterton Prison, Cambridgeshire (have seen the census for the prison but it gives no details). No idea what misdeed he had done, or where.... Regards Josie

You might try local papers .... if you know 'where' and 'when' the deed was likely to have been reported. The Newspaper Archive in Colindale, North London has a large collection ... if you are near enough to it! Regs Jane
