Hi Kay, Well you've just burst my bubble! I thought it was too good to be true! I've had another look at the census page and yep, I can now see that it says 'sawyer' I'm laughing about it now! I'm pleased I put this thread on as I'd rather know the truth. I knew it didn't feel right somehow! Many Thanks Helen

Hi Helen, Had the same myself,,thought i was from brainy lot till..saw under magnifying glass that it actually said''Sawyer,,the S is a long sweeping one,and mistakenly took for L.. so this could be the same for you ?? I found this alot in the shipyard workers;;; and farm labourers,,, kay..

I have an ancestor whose occupation is 'lawyer' on the 1851 census. However, 10yrs later on the 1861, he's an 'ag lab' I thought this was a bit strange and it's definitely the same person. Has anyone else come across something similar? Regards Helen
