I have lost my BUTLINS – not nice under any circumstance! My great grandmother is MARY ANN BUTLIN, born 30th Sept 1868, Rothwell Northants. Her parents are THOMAS BUTLIN – shown on various census as b.1841 Rothwell Northants and ELIZA STURMAN (b.Orton, Northants. 29th Dec 1846) . I have a note of their wedding from IGI but cant find the ref. on FreeBMD or 1837. I know from the 1841 census (as they are living at the same address as the 1861/1871) that his parents are WILLIAM BUTLIN and SARAH. THOMAS also has two brothers JOHN (born c.1849) and RICHARD (born c.1847). The problem I have is that I cannot find a birth reference for any of the boys, Thomas, Richard or John, or a marriage ref for THOMAS and ELIZA Now, the question is, are they hiding – are they big gaps in FreeBMD about this time – or did they in fact go to Skegness and start building a holiday camp?????? Any answers gratefully received. Trudy |

Hi again just googled and : Billy Butlin, a fairground worker from Canada, set up his first holiday camp at Skegness in 1936. So I think they must have been abducted unless they did come from Canada , sorry lol. Julie |

It might sound really obvious, as i am sure you have happened across this in your huntings. - Rothwell and the pronunciation /spelling 'Rowell' are almost interchangable jess |

Oh drat!!!!!! Now I'm confused again, gone back to my notes because something didn't quite gel and it's the date for Thomas's birth - it is definitely 1840 as he is shown as being 6months old on the 1841 Census with his parents and siblings, living in the same house he is in on all cenuses to 1871. - but I still can't find the right ref for him. Think I'm about to take a long walk off a very short pier - this is driving me insane!!! Trudy |
