Thought this may be of interest to some people here: There are 66 Diaper's listed in the Southampton telephone book alone - aand the name can be traced throughout the History of the city to medievel times and beyond. Because of the strong links between the city and this name, there is to be a 'Diaper Day'. This will take place on Saturday June 25th between 12.30pm and 4pm at Woolston Community Centre, the old St Marks school building, Church Lane, Woolston, Southampton. You have to register for this event... so if you're a diaper in Southampton (or would like to get involved) I'd be happy to pass on the details of Angie Turtle given in the local Echo if you contact me here. The name Diaper is thought to have originated from 'D'Ypres' meaning a family from the flemish town. In 1550 there are references to a 'Diaper' living in Romsey... and there are strong maritime links also - with John Diaper who was a fireman on (and survived) the Titanic...as well as Captain Tom Diaper - who died in 1949 but was a crewman of the famous J class racing yacht, Shamrock. (Tom Diaper's wife was named Fanny Treehorne - they had five children). The Diaper Day is designed to be open to anyone with an interest and knowledge of the family, and particularly to anyone who has artifacts and objects they might be able to lend for the 2006 exhibition.

Should your thread title read Daiper? I thought at first it was a celebration of nappies in America! nell

Nope, it really is supposed to be 'Diaper'... :)

Isn't it strange that some of us think these names are strange but to me DIAPER is just another surname as I lived in southern Hampshire and I know there was a girl at school with that surname. What a long lasting link with Southampton!

I have Diapers of Southampton in my Tree and I am planning to go to the Diaper Day. Trouble is that it clashes with the London Get-Together so sorry guys, I will be going to Southampton. Jim
