Nothing to do with my tree, but I found this while browsing through 1851 census transcript for Barnsley: MOSS George 26 Ag Lab Barnsley Jane 26 Scholar Barnsley Charles 4 Scholar Edward 3 Barnsley Thomas twin 1 week Barnsley Ellen twin 7 days Barnsley nell

Well at least you know when they they were born almost exactly. I wonder if Thomas was the oldest and born before midnight and Ellen was then born after midnight.

Actually Nell, I think that was jolly obliging of the Enumerator - at least you know the age is right. Having scraped my way through PRS which give age at death as '1 splodge' I am left screaming in frustration - one WHAT? Hour? Minute? Day? Week? Month? Year? (Because you can never find a corresponding birth can you) Marjorie

My auntie told me a story about twins she went to school with who were born 2 weeks apart. Apparently the first one was born and then they used to let the second one happen naturally, it was usually straight after but not always

Paula I can't believe that's right! After the first child there would be a massive risk of infection. Besides all the contractions of the womb to expel the placenta would surely encourage no. 2 baby to appear . They certainly don't do that nowadays! Though I do know of twins born either side of midnight so they have 2 different birth years! nell

You can tell if someone is a twin/multiple birth by looking at their birth certificate. It has the time of birth as well as the date.
