Which is the best site to order from. Upto now I've been lucky in that I live in Wakefield and most of my ancestors were from Wakefield. But now instead of just popping into my local Registry Office I need to go furter afield......any help?? Sue xx

The best and cheapest is to go direct to: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ £7 if you have full GRO reference (from FreeBMD for instance) Good luck, Stephen

You can order by post from other Register Offices at £7 each plus stamped addressed envelope. You can find the address you want here http://www(.)genuki(.)org(.)uk/big/eng/RegOffice/ Remove brackets

If you look on http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ they have a list of local BMD sites where you can search online (free) and order direct - or, at the very least, print off an order form where you add in your particular info and send it off with the dosh. Intermediate versions allow credit card with order form, or telephone order, or print-off part-completed form. I've found the local offices very helpful. I gather some of the London ones aren't - but they don't seem to have online sites, either. Christine

Sue Register offices vary greatly. Some London ones refuse to provide certs for genealogical purposes. I generally use the GRO, but have ordered certs from the following offices who have been very quick: Richmond (London) Cambridge Cirencester One other point to bear in mind is that the certs from the GRO are photocopies of the copies they received from the register offices. The certs from reg. offices are usually handwritten to order, so the GRO ones are older handwriting. nell
