On my grandfather's grave it gives his name, John Elijah Miller M.M. As he was a mason who worked on Liverpool Cathedral, I have assumed that M.M. means master mason. However, I am wondering if it also could mean Military Medal? Has anyone ever heard of the term 'Master Mason'?

If you have dates etc. you can probably look up to see if he got a Military Medal (Gazette). Did he serve in the forces?

You can read about the MM here- http://www.firstworldwar.*com/atoz/militarymedal.htm (remove *)

I rather fancy that military medal as an abreviation would not be separated by a full stop........MM. Think the Master Mason would be more apropriate or as Helen has just said.....Monumental Mason Bob

MM could be monumental mason? nell

I think monumental mason could be more likely. He did work at Liverpool Cathedral and they did have him listed as M.M...I should have thought of monumental mason rather than master mason. I am in touch with the Cathedral so I will ask them. Thanks for your help everyone. Ann
