My brickwall is a Benjamin Robinson who was aboard Le Tonnant, when he married in 1806 in Portsmouth. I applied to National Archives for a copy of ADM 36/16231, which was a long shot, to try and get his date and place of birth. I was charged £10 for time to prepare an estimate of the cost and today, I was staggered to find they want £198.90 for the file, as it is made up of 442 pages. On top of that, there is post and packaging, which ranges from £4.87 to £17.91. All I want is the date and place of birth and that seems a really expensive way of getting it. Any thoughts??? |

Jan At that price, you could hire a helicopter and go and look for yourself, LOL. Hopefully, someone will be going to the NA and offer to get this for you - you probably only want a page or so, anyway. What about a request on the Records Board? In a similar position to you, my rellie was aboard the Theseus - all I want is his DOB and any other identifying info about him - I truly don't care who else was on the ship etc. I think the NA site is very unhelpful - you have to buy the document before you know if its going to be any use. Good luck Marjorie |
