My g.g.g. grandfather is down in the 1861 & 1881 census as being born (1817) 'on sea' Plymouth. Does anyone have any ideas why this might be? Why would his mother be at sea? Would she be immigrating ? Relatively new to all this so any suggestions would be very appreciated. Nicolette

Sometimes wives accompanied their husband's whilst at sea. You would need to check for the father's occupation. Kim

Dear All many thanks for your help & suggestions. Have been out all day, tea, kids bath & then work tonight but I will dig out the census references tomorrow morning . Thomas Richards born 1817, Trevethin & Blaenavon, Monmouthshire in the censuses I think .He's quite easy to find because he has a daughter called Selina born 1859 & there are no others with that kind of name. More tomorrow, thanks gain. Nico

Nicolette It definately says 'at sea' on the 1861 and 'on sea Plymouth' on the 1881. I agree as already mentioned, his father was possibly in the army? Wives did travel with their husbands if they were posted overseas for a long time. My great great grandfather was born in India, his father was in the Army there. Yours was just after the end of the Napolionic wars. They could have been on there way back to England. Perhaps in Plymouth harbour. Perhaps she was in labour as they returned so Thomas was born aboard ship in Plymouth. Margaret
