Grandad (1897) and his brothers ( 1889,1896 both killed). The age was 18-41 initially only single men. Good explanation here http://www.firstworldwar(.)com/atoz/ukconscription.htm (good site anyway) Bob |

some reasons why a man of fighting age might not have fought: -- reserved occupation -- failed medical -- eyesight, bad legs or feet, weak chests were common -- still waiting for call-up when the war ended -- too short. They had to reduce the minimum height, but it still ruled some men out. People were a lot smaller then. |

Conscription was introduced in 1916. Unless you had a reserved occupation, were medically unfit or a conscientious objector, I think you would be called up. Your relative would be 29 in 1916 so I think he would have been called up. Have you checked the Medal Roll index on the National Archives site? My own grandfather was enlisted - he was born 1875. Luckily he didn't serve abroad, but was based in Kent. He left his wife to mind his shop, and cope with bringing up 4 boys on hardly any money (the youngest one was born 1917 - my dad!) My other grandfather was off to France in 1914, having lied about his age to join the army when he was too young. nell |
