Does anybody know whether you would be recorded anywhere if you were a trawler fisherman for an occupation? Would you need to hold some sort of ticket. It's a long shot but I'm looking for a lead.

Thanks for the info girls. This man William Joseph Lawrey was a trawler fisherman on the 1901 Census and was living in Plymouth, so I assume he worked the seas around that area. Germaine. Which Jim are you talking about? I have received William's birth certificate today in an attempt to find his father but it just has a line through the column for the fathers details. What a disappointment. Jan

Hi Jan, It is Jim Porter on the Bosun's Watch. It is a site run for fisherman and any one interested in Fleetwood. He may help you get in touch with the right place for you to find out what you need. Germaine If you can't find it send me your eamil address and I will send you a link to the home page.

Under section 410 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894 any motor trawler of 25 tons & upwards had to issue a Certificate of Discharge(S1)to any deckhand discharged from such vessels, this was done by the owners registered office or agent. To enquire giving as much detail as possible, such as the full name, period, ship owner,if known & port then apply to; Registrar-General of Shipping and Seamen,Llantrisant Road, Landaff,Cardiff. I cannot be certain the registrar office is still situate there but you can try a Google to confirm,if not the PRO may have them. Regards,Michael
