Morning Everyone Can anyone tell me please does the census also cover Northern Ireland? I am particually interested about Newry, Co Armagh. This is where my great grandfather was born on 6th Sept 1896, in military barracks to John Cotter and Mary Ann Cotter formerly Walsh. Any help please............or ideas! Thanks alot Carley |

No the 1901 online covers England and Wales , and then there's one for Scotland too. The Irish 1901 is available in Dublin and Belfast OR by order at your local LDS centre, BUT it's not indexed by surname, so you have to know where they were from. The 1911 is also available, but you'll be very lucky to get any earlier censuses. Chloe |

If your Great grandfather was born in military barracks, then chances are hid father was in the military and you may be able to find militry records for him. The national Archivist has some records of Cotter's which I've given below for your information - these refer to James, these are the only records for a J.Cotter. Officers on half pay - Captain J Cotter, late 3 F ... 5 Jan 70 (1870) Infantry Militia - Ireland, Lieutenant James L Cotter...24 Jan 77 (1877) North Cork |
