I have just found my ggg Grandfathers Thomas Gallantrys marriage after looking for 3years. Looked on IGI not there Looked on 1837 Looked on freebmd. Have looked on Parish registers over and over the same ones. Found it last week the writing was terrible could hardly read it. I thought his mother was an Elizabeth Gallantry b 1812 unmarried who had several children. As I found on parish registers a birth in 1841 of Thomas to Elizabeth. on 1851 census Thomas aged 9 was living with brother aged 13 with a family called Parkinson relationship was Cousin. Elizabeth b1812 turns up on 1881 census living with daughter Elizabeth, so not dead. This is all in Workington Cumberland. But on Thomas's Marriage he has his Father as Robert Gallantry (nailer). Have Roberts family on 1841 census Thomas not there he wasn't born. 1851 census Robert was dead but his wife and other children there but no Thomas. If this was his family why wasn't he with them? He's driving me mad. Any Ideas. Was he telling the truth on his marriage certificate? Robert was the brother to this Elizabeth b 1812 which I thought was his uncle. Very confusing |

I am going to put this into paras to make it easier (GR always mushes up the first entry on a thread): The parish registers have the birth in 1841 of Thomas to Elizabeth. You think this mother is Elizabeth Gallantry b 1812 unmarried who had several children on 1851 census Thomas aged 9 was living with brother aged 13 with a family called Parkinson relationship was Cousin. ----------------------------------------------------------- Sorry, I am not sure what the confusion is. Are Elizabeth and Robert siblings or husband and wife? If there is no father's name in the parish baptism register, I think it quite likely that Thomas invented a father for his marriage cert, probably his uncle as it was a ready made name and maybe his uncle helped to bring him up. nell |

Thanks nell, Elizabeth & Robert were Siblings so You think he lied on his certificate. He wasn't brought up by this Robert as Thomas on 1851 & 1861 census was living with this family of Parkinson. Thomas also didn't live near the family of Robert. But how did he know he was a Nailer? Robert was Dead when Thomas was 3 years old. |

Well maybe he invented that, or maybe someone told him. Or maybe he's right and Robert was really his dad, in which case we are looking at incest. I think illegitimacy is enough of a disgrace! My great-grandmother has 'illegitimate daughter of Susan Barnes' on her marriage cert so at least I know her mother's name. nell |

Nell, It could have been Incest as you say but this Elizabeth who has these children just keeps dissapearing turning up in different parishes giving birth to Children. But why if she is Thomas's mother is he not with her on the censuses. Or with Roberts Wife if he's his father. why is he farmed out to Cousins? I will probably never Know. Robert was a Nailer it is on all his other childrens baptisms and on the census. |

Farmed out to cousins because his mum couldn't keep all her children, I guess. nell |
