Military Tailors

My GtGt Grandad supposedly owned a Military Tailors on Bond street in the early part of the 1900's. I remember someone asking how they could go about finding a list of Tailors and wondered if they ever found out what they were looking for and how, or if anyone else would know the answer. I have a vague idea that trade directories would help but don't know which ones to look at. Are there any on line, or do I have to buy a CD? TIA Claire xx

Claire You might strike lucky here: www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp This is how I would use this. Click on 'keyword' and then choose London from the drop down menu. Then you can select a decade and then click 'find directories'. Not all areas are covered and I think there are mainly outer London directories after 1900, but you may find one useful. When you've selected your directory, click 'browse directory' and then enter a page number. Some directories have a straightforward alphabetical list of residents, and some are like yellow pages, with an alphabetically organised list of trades/businesses. You may find a Military Tailors section, or it might be in amongst Tailors. You can enter higher and lower page numbers to search until you find the right page. nell

Found a possibility, but is there any way else I can search if it isn't correct, or to verify? TIA Claire xx

I think you will have to find someone to look at the electoral roll and other street directories to confirm. What makes you think it might not be correct? Are there any family events which you can get a cert for which would give his occupation and address? nell

Right :o) I know he was working as a salesman for a tailor on 1901 census. I also know that my Gt grandfather started his apprenticeship with him in about 1910. My gran was told he owned a tailors on Bond Street (but he may have only worked there and exaggerated ;o) ) I have found a Tailor of the right name (Stevens) in 1915 (but not on Bond St although still central London) which is giving me the question as to whether it is the right one or not.
