Sherburn is in North Yorks; Ferrybridge in West Yorks. No trace of either farm - is Sweamans the correct spelling? They may no longer be going concerns, or may have changed their names. Have you looked on GENUKI to see which churches are in the Sherburn area? nell

Thnanks Nell I got the spelling form a will and did wonder whether the v was a w, otherwise it is typed and quite distict. The trouble is, as I understand it, that there are two Sherburns in Yorkshire and I need to tie down the place names to find which one it is Thanks for trying. I am now terrified to go out and collect my 87 year old mother in case jess thinks I'm not paying attention to my replies! Sylvie

You might have to contact the local records office, who may have an index of farms or something to help. nell

Hi Sylvie Seeing this thread has reminded me about your query about the company. The general concencus (sp!) amongst the Yorkshire lasses was that it was most likely in West Yorkshire. The church local to Sherburn in Elmet is All Saints and there is also a Methodist church. The parish registers are at the Borthwick Institute in York. The church local to Sherburn is St Hilda's and there is also a mthodist church here too. Again the parish registers are at the Borthwick. Unfortunately this is not close to where I live so I can't go and take a look for you. Jeanette x

Thank you , thank you, thank you I suppose it is no surprise that I had to end up getting a will to be able to interpret what it says on the censuses! (Does anyone recall that one census said the poor chap was senile - I've just found a certificate at the PRO in which he is confirmed as of unsound mind by Her Majesty's Masters of Lunacy!) So pleased that I now have churches too. I had done a search on High Wallaces IGI site but Yorkshire is such a vast area! I can now go back and have another nose and failing that, can contact the records office Thanks again Sylvie
