Entry in London Gazette 'Lt xxx resigns his commn. 23.10.1943 and is re-granted the rank of Capt.' Query- Why would it be re- granted... does that mean it had been taken away previously? Any one help? Kim

Cant really help with your query, but you might be able to order this persons army record online, you need to go to the National Archives site, and search the catalogue. Anything that comes up with a WO reference relates to the war office. I have had military records from them that give immense detail on the person and their service histroy. Good luck, Sarah Just noticed the date 1914, so you might not be able to get this online after all.....!

There is another entry where he was 'acting temp' Capt , seems strange to only be given the title after resigning his commission. Kim

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I beleive that when an officer retires/resigns he would be entitled to use a rank one higher than he had when serving.

Your man would appear to have left the Army sometime before WW11 started. He was re-employed in a different branch of the Army and so his rank of Captain was forfeit when he rejoined and he became a Lieut. After he retired as a Lieut he was re-granted his Captain honorary rank. As an example I left the Regular Army in 1974 as a Captain and transferred to the Regular Army Reserve of Officers as a Captain. I then served in the Armed Forces of a Gulf State both as a Major and subsequently as a Lieut Commander in their Navy. This had no effect on my RARO rank as had I been recalled I would have come back into the British Army as a Captain. When I joined the Territorial Army as a private in 1986 I had to forfeit my Captain rank, because my TA service took priority over any possible recall. After one year I was commissioned as a Lieut. When I left the Territorial Army in 1993 I was re-granted my rank of Captain as I would then have been recalled to serve again as a Captain had Her Majesty been so desperate. Hope that is helpful. (At one point in WW11 my father was substantive Lieut, Temp Captain and Acting Major all at the same time). Regards Keith

Thank you all for your replies,I had not realised it was so complicated. It makes sense now .I believe he served in WW1 and WW11 as well. Thanks a lot for your answers, especially Keith. Kim
