Hi maybe someone will know about this ... My Grandfather was a Merchant Seaman Cheif Cook he once said to us that he refused to get his medals as he had to pay for them is this true, he is gone now so cannot ask him again. Does anyone know anything about this paying for your own medal, and is it possible to obtain these medals today?????? he was torpedoed twice whislt at sea in WW2. regards Colette xxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Colette I don't know about having to pay for your medals, but my dad informs me you had to apply for them. Many men were disgusted by this fact, and never bothered to apply for their medals out of protest. Julie
