I know there are mapping programs for those who aren't computer illiterates, like me. I have the surname distribution atlas, which is like the Ancestry facility, but much more sophisticated, and based on the 1881 census. The Ancestry facility is really only a toy, but with more accurate software, based on earlier censuses, you really can pin down some of the rarer surnames to their sources. |

Wow! What a useful tool! It could help identify where your ancestors might have come from, especially if they moved to London! Thanks for that Lyndsay. |

Its ok I found it If you are interested you need to go to ancestry.com (not uk) click search records tab at the top then on right hand side is family facts and under that surname distribution. Click that on left change it to uk then type in your surname gives distribution for 1891. YOU DON'T need to login to do it so anyone can use it. |

On ancestry there is a way of seeing where all the people are in the country with the same surname as you in 1891. Great if your surname is rare. But I can't remember how to find it! Does anyone know? |
