Well, my husband's family and mine (we found out later) were both living within spitting distance in 1900s. I am sure that if his family ran pubs, my family would have drunk in them!!! Several of my family ran pubs too, but not as successfully as my husband's lot. Apparently they made a small fortune in WW1 - I presume a lot of people were drowning their sorrows. nell

Hi Helen! My lot lived at 4, Charles St. Finsbury in 1881 (MOORE). Is that the same time as yours? Perhaps they used to meet in the Pub!! Hazel

Remember I had Charles street as an address for my husband's grandfather William Sidney Carter's place of birth? It was in Mile End reg district and there were several places it could have been. For a while I thought it was Vallence Rd Bethnal Green. Well, while I was looking for another branch of the family I was on historical directories and looked at the street directory for London 1895, the year after the birth was registered. I found a Charles Street and the directory usefully told me it was between Commercial Road East and Spring Garden Place, Stepney. Sure enough, at no. 86 was William Sidney's dad. The really interesting bit is that on William's birth cert his father Charles Carter is a wharf labourer. In the street directory a year later he is a confectioner. By 1915 he was the landlord of the Pakenham Arms, a mere stroll from the FRC. I think he went up in the world a bit! Many thanks to all who helped me earlier. nell
